2 Stove Fires - 6/17/2008

Brighton Firefighters responded to two kitchen fires with 12 hours of each other.
The first occurred at 1600 Elmwood Ave in an apartment building.  The second incident happened on Fieldston Terrace about 1 block from our Station 3 firehouse.

In both cases the fire started on the stove and extended into the cabinets above.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and in both cases stopped before larger fires occurred.

2 Firefighters Sworn In - 6/6/2008

Firefighter JP Lacey took the Oath of Office on May 29th and was sworn in a the newest career firefighter for the Brighton Fire Department.
JP crossed over from the volunteer side of the Department as have many before him.  He was a volunteer with the Department for four years and served as purchasing agent prior to assuming his role as a paid firefighter.

Also graduating was Shane Bagley, a member of our bunker program who continues to volunteer for the Department.
Shane went to the fire academy sponsored by the BFD.

Congratulations to both firefighters for an outstanding performance at the academy.

BFD Swift Water Training - 5/31/2008

If you drove by Ellison Park on Saturday, May 31st, 2008, you may have seen several people walking around in bright yellow rubber suits.
That's because Brighton Firefighters were busy training in swift water rescue operations.

Swift water consists of any body of water that has a current.  It only takes a current of 1-3 mph to make maneuvering difficult, especially if you have been in an accident or suffered a traumatic incident which resulted in a water entrapment .

The training consisted of scenarios where victims were stranded in the water, floating downstream and stuck in rocks.
Each scenario required objectives, strategies and tactics to effect a timely rescue.

MDA - FILL THE BOOT - 5/30/2008

On June 4th, 2008 motorist traveling through Brighton will once again be asked to help Firefighter raise money for the MDA.
This annual event raised over $8800.00 last year and will hopefully meet this years goal of $9000.00.

You will see both Volunteer and paid firefighters on many corners in Brighton with boots in hand.  Please give what you can.

For the International Association of Fire Fighters, the tradition of raising money to help MDA goes all the way back to 1954. Fill-the-Boot is the IAFF's signature campaign event, in which fire fighters greet motorists, shoppers and others and ask them to drop donations for MDA into fire fighter boots.

The program - which in 1999 helped the IAFF raise $13 million in North America to support MDA - has had a huge impact on MDA's ability to help people with ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.
